INTRODUCING ALYSSUM SEEDS

Alyssum, also known as sweet alyssum, has clustered small flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Native to the Mediterranean, alyssum is suited for different climates and can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 9. It has rapid growth, sprawling on the ground, excellent for filling in gaps in the garden.

PLANTING ALYSSUM SEEDS

Sow alyssum seeds in the garden bed, after the last frost. They can be started indoors as well, 4 to 6 weeks before the frost ends. These seeds need light to germinate. Press them gently onto the soil surface, without covering. Make sure the soil is moist until germination starts, usually within a week or two.

MAINTAINING ALYSSUM PLANTS

The alyssum plant is relatively easy to maintain, requiring very little care when established. It prefers full sun exposure but tolerates partial shade—especially in hot climates. Water the plants regularly until established, after that only during prolonged drought. Removing dry flowers isn’t necessary; alyssum will continue blooming and self-seeding on its own.
