Survival Garden Seeds offers high-quality oat seeds for sale, perfect for gardeners looking to cultivate their grains for oatmeal, baking, or fodder for livestock. Our non-GMO seeds are chosen for their strong germination rates. They will produce robust, high-yielding oat plants.
Oats have a long cultivation history, spanning thousands of years. They are a staple grain, containing essential nutrients like fiber, vitamins, and protein. Oat groats, oatmeal, and oat flour are all used in a variety of foods—porridges and cereals, baked goods, and other uses. They also serve as valuable fodder for livestock and can be a wonderful option for cat grass. Their milky tops are used for medicinal purposes as well. These grains are adaptable to a range of climatic conditions and can be grown from USDA zones 3-10. It is appropriate for growing as a summer crop with spring planting in zones 3 to 7, and a winter crop in zones 8-10. It will winter-kill in zones 6 and colder, allowing gardeners to plant freely in spring without interference.
Sow oat seeds for planting directly in the garden or field in early spring. For an autumn harvest, plant them in late summer. Plant the seeds about ½-1 inches deep. Oats will germinate best in cool, moist soil around 60-65°F. They usually sprout within two weeks.
Oats require consistent moisture, especially with germination and in the early growth stages. They prefer fertile, well-drained soil. Otherwise, they are relatively low maintenance. As a cereal crop, oats can grow quite tall and may need support in windy areas. Harvest your oats when the grains are mature and dry in late summer or early fall.
With oat grass seeds from Survival Garden Seeds, gardeners and farmers alike have a chance to grow a valuable crop that provides a well-rounded, versatile culinary grain, fodder for livestock, a medicinal plant, and enhances soil structure and health.
