INTRODUCING BEET SEEDS

Beets originated in the Mediterranean, but today they are cultivated around the world for edible roots and greens they produce. A versatile food source, both beetroots and greens are rich in nutrients and used in many ways - fresh, cooked, grilled, and even pickled. It can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 2 to 11. As a resilient crop, beet plants adapt to many different climates. Beets’ ability to grow in cool weather allows longer cultivation, giving you more fresh produce during the off-season.

HOW TO PLANT BEET SEEDS

Planting beet seeds directly in the garden will help to prevent damage to the delicate taproot and give your beets the best start. However, you can also start beet seeds early indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date. Sow the seeds about 1/2 inch deep, with spacing according to the directions on your packet for your chosen beet variety. Beets can be planted very early in spring when the soil is workable within a cold frame to give you a head start on the growing season. Try succession planting every 2 weeks for a continuous harvest. Beet seeds will germinate best in soil temperatures 50° to 85° F, usually within 5 to 14 days.

MAINTAINING BEET PLANTS

Beet roots require consistent moisture for development. Regular watering is important, during dry spells particularly. Mulch keeps soil moisture present while protecting roots from heat. Thin the seedlings to 3 - 4 inches apart to allow each beet to grow well. Thinned greens are edible and can be used in salads. Beets are mostly resistant to pests.
