Long Island Improved Brussels Sprout Seeds – Heirloom Favorite - 1 Packet is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.

A time-tested heirloom since the 1890s, Long Island Improved delivers compact plants with heavy yields of sweet, nutty sprouts for family meals.
Why Grow This Variety
First introduced in the late 19th century, Long Island Improved is one of the oldest and most beloved Brussels sprout varieties still grown today. Gardeners prize it for its semi-dwarf habit, compact plants, and high yields of medium-to-large sprouts that are uniform and reliable. Unlike Catskill, which is bred for large firm sprouts on taller stalks, Long Island Improved is shorter, making it easier to grow in tighter spaces while still producing dozens of delicious sprouts per plant. Its flavor sweetens after a touch of frost, making harvest season something to look forward to.
- Historic Heirloom Variety – Introduced in the 1890s, Long Island Improved remains a gardener’s favorite for reliability and flavor.
- Compact, Space-Saving Plants – Semi-dwarf stalks grow only 20–24 inches tall, ideal for smaller gardens or tighter planting spaces.
- Heavy Yields – Each plant produces dozens of medium-to-large sprouts, uniform in size and perfect for kitchen use.
- Sweet, Nutty Flavor – Milder and sweeter than many varieties, especially after light frost improves flavor.
- Cold-Hardy & Reliable – Thrives as a cool-season crop, providing steady harvests through fall and early winter.
How to Grow
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your last spring frost, or plant outdoors for a fall harvest. Sow ¼ inch deep in fertile, well-drained soil and space plants 18–24 inches apart. Sturdy stalks reach only about 20–24 inches tall but pack in heavy yields, making this variety efficient for small gardens and homesteads. Brussels sprouts thrive in cool weather, and Long Island Improved is especially cold-hardy, with flavor improving in cooler nights and after light frost. Harvest sprouts from the bottom up as they reach 1–2 inches in diameter, encouraging continued production for a steady supply of sweet, nutty-sprouts.
