INTRODUCING MULLEIN SEEDS

Mullein plant seeds have a long history of being cultivated for soothing properties in traditional medicine, especially for respiratory conditions. It has origins tracing back to Europe and Asia. Today, mullein is grown for both medicinal benefits and for its unusual appearance in gardens. Mullein is capable of growing in USDA hardiness zones 3 to 9, making it suitable for many climates. It can self-seed, adapting to various soil conditions. This makes it an easy-to-grow plant for gardeners of any level.

PLANTING MULLEIN SEEDS

Mullein seeds can be sown directly in the garden in late fall, or start them indoors in late winter to spring. If you are planting mullein seeds in spring, 4 weeks of cold stratification will improve germination rates. Because they require light to germinate, don’t cover the seeds with soil. Simply press them lightly onto the surface. Keep the soil moist until germination. Usually, it occurs within 14 to 21 days. Mullein prefers a sunny spot, tolerating drought once established. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 12 - 18 inches apart for growth space.

MAINTAINING MULLEIN PLANTS

Mullein plants are very drought-tolerant. They can thrive with minimal care, making them ideal for xeriscaping. They don’t need regular fertilization; in fact, too much fertilizer can inhibit their growth. Watering during long dry periods will support young plants. Mature ones can largely manage with little water. After the second year, mullein self-seeds prolifically. This is an ideal time for harvesting mullein seeds. You can manage its spread by removing spent flowers.

With Survival Garden Seeds' mullein seeds, gardeners can reap the dual benefits of cultivating a plant that is both visually stunning and useful. Mullein's towering flower spikes and soft foliage add an architectural element to the garden space.
