Pansies are popular plants in the viola family. These stunning flowers are also edible and can be used as dessert decorations or in salads. Pansies are grown successfully in cooler climates, where they can be perennial. In hotter areas, they are grown annually as they do not tolerate extreme heat. Pansy flowers bloom profusely during spring and fall and even through winter in some milder climates.
Start pansy flower seeds indoors, in a dark place, 8-10 weeks before the last frost and lightly cover with soil. Germination will occur within 2 to 3 weeks. Keep the soil moist but don’t over-saturate with water. Transplant the seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, spacing them 6 to 8 inches apart in a sunny area. Pansy seeds may benefit from cold stratification, which can help with germination and provide stronger plants.
Pansies enjoy regular watering, especially during drought. It’s best to keep the soil constantly moist and to cover the soil with mulch. Deadhead dry blooms to encourage more flowering. Pansies can suffer in the heat, but they flourish again in cooler weather. Fertile soil will ensure their vigorous growth and blooming.
Brighten your garden beds with these lovely blooms. Survival Garden Seeds' pansy seeds give every gardener the opportunity to rejoice in the cultivation of a cool-season flower. They are delightful and charming and add some color to your garden after summer’s blooms have faded.
