INTRODUCING PEA MICROGREENS SEEDS
Pea microgreens, young seedlings of the pea plant, possess the nutritional benefits of mature peas, including significant amounts of protein. They are especially popular with vegetarians. This is a good way to include plant-based protein, with harvesting starting soon after the first true leaves develop. Growing these microgreens is an easy way to have some fun growing new things and to add to a more healthy diet.
HOW TO GROW PEA MICROGREENS
Soak pea microgreen seeds in water for 12-24 hours. Spread them thickly over 1/2-1 inch of moist potting mix in a well-draining shallow container, about 5 inches by 5 inches in size. Press seeds in firmly. Mist them with water and cover the top to retain moisture and block out any light. Place the covered container in a completely dark space. Keep covered and in darkness for 3-5 days. Mist as needed to retain moisture. When there is a few inches of growth, or when the microgreens begin to lift the cover, expose them to direct light. Harvest with scissors in 8-12 days.
MAINTAINING PEA MICROGREENS
Pea microgreens grow slightly slower than other microgreens. They need regular misting with water throughout their growth process, with adequate lighting from grow lights or the sun after they sprout. Harvest pea microgreens when they reach about 3 to 4 inches, just above the soil line. These shoots are exceptionally crunchy and sweet. Consume them right after harvest, for optimum pea microgreens nutrition.
