This highly beneficial plant is one of the most well-known, widely grown perennials in the world, with an abundance of benefits for your homestead. The pretty purple flower attracts a wide variety of beneficial insects and promotes biodiversity in the garden. As a rotation crop it can be used to prevent soil erosion, build nitrogen in soil, enhance soil texture and quality, and provide groundcover for fallow fields.
- Medicinal Herb & More - Also known as lucerne, Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is an easy-to-grow flowering perennial that has exceptionally high nutritional value and has been used for centuries in traditional herbalism. As a medicinal herb, alfalfa seeds and leaves can be dried or it can be grown as alfalfa sprouts or microgreens for its bioactive compounds that support health and fight inflammation.
- Resilient & Useful – Alfalfa is one of the most versatile crops a homesteader can add to their garden and is highly adaptable to cool weather and difficult growing conditions. It can be used as a beneficial medicinal herb, sprouting microgreen, grazing fodder, silage, green manure, and nitrogen-building cover crop. In the United States, alfalfa is one of the most widely grown crops, especially valuable for hay, silage, and as a forage plant because it is so high in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.
