INTRODUCING KOHLRABI SEEDS
Kohlrabi, with its peculiar shape, is a nutritionally rich vegetable high in vitamin C, fiber, and potassium, and is often eaten raw in salads. It is also easy to cook and adds a delicious flavor to your dishes. Kohlrabi is native to Europe but has since spread worldwide. Kohlrabi can be cultivated successfully in USDA hardiness zones 2 through 11, growing in cold easily.
PLANTING KOHLRABI SEEDS
Start indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting outside 6-8 inches apart or sow the kohlrabi seeds directly into the garden bed. For a harvest in spring, 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost is ideal, or they can be planted in late summer for a fall crop. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep and keep evenly moist. Kohlrabi germinates best in cool soil and seedlings can even handle light frost. It will usually sprout in 7-14 days.
MAINTAINING KOHLRABI PLANTS
Kohlrabi is mostly straightforward when it comes to care. Consistent moisture is necessary for tender bulbs, so regular watering is advised. A layer of mulch will provide significant help in that regard, while also controlling the weed growth. When the bulbs reach around 3 inches in diameter, they are ready to be harvested. They can also be harvested when smaller, for a more tender texture.
Growing kohlrabi at home is easy and rewarding. It is nutritious and fun to grow, plus it tastes great! Enjoy it raw to get that crunchy texture or cook it and enjoy its tender, turnip-like flavor. Its distinctive appearance plus its quick, easy growth make it an ideal plant for introducing children to the joys of gardening (and eating their veggies)!
