What Makes Survival Garden Seeds Different - non-GMO heirloom seeds

Grow fresh, nutrient-rich greens all season with the Spinach Seed Collection, featuring three classic heirloom non-GMO varieties: Viroflay, Giant Noble, and Bloomsdale. These reliable open-pollinated spinaches thrive in cool weather, providing continuous harvests for salads, cooking, and preserving. Fast to germinate and simple to grow, this diverse trio delivers tender baby spinach leaves or full, hearty bunches depending on how you plant and harvest.

Three Time-Tested Heirloom Varieties:

  • Viroflay – A French heirloom with smooth, broad leaves up to 12 inches long. Excellent for early spring sowing and quick baby spinach harvests.
  • Bloomsdale – The classic savoy spinach with crinkled, glossy leaves and superior cold tolerance, ideal for fall and overwintering crops.
  • Giant Noble – A broadleaf variety that produces large, tender leaves perfect for cooking, canning, or freezing.

Versatile for Indoor or Outdoor Growing:
Spinach is a cool-season crop that adapts to many growing setups—traditional garden beds, raised planters, patio containers, or indoor hydroponic systems. Sow thickly for baby spinach or space plants out for mature heads. Continuous succession planting ensures a steady supply of fresh greens for the kitchen.

Cold-Hardy and Reliable:
These heirlooms thrive across USDA Zones 3–9 and perform best in temperatures between 45–70°F. Bloomsdale and Noble are especially resilient to frost, allowing extended harvests in late fall or early spring.

Planting & Growing Instructions:

  • When to Sow: Early spring and late summer for fall crops
  • Soil Temp: 45–70°F
  • Depth: ½ inch deep
  • Spacing: Thin to 2–4 inches apart, rows 12–18 inches apart
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade
  • Care: Keep soil evenly moist and mulch lightly
  • Germination: 7–14 days
  • Harvest: Baby leaves in 25–30 days; mature bunches in 40–55 days

For best fall flavor, harvest after a light frost. Each packet includes clear guidance on planting, succession sowing, and seed saving.

Spinach collection - good for indoor and outdoor gardening

Spinach Packed with Flavor

Viroflay spinach is a French heirloom variety that is known for its large, dark green leaves and sweet, tender flavor. It is a slow-growing, semi-savoy spinach, best suited for cool weather conditions. Viroflay spinach is prized by many gardeners for its resistance to bolting, which makes it a great choice for extended harvests.

Giant Noble spinach is another heirloom that is known for its large, smooth, and glossy leaves. This variety is a type of flat-leaf spinach that is slightly crinkled around the edges. Giant Noble spinach is a favorite among gardeners and chefs because it has a delicate, buttery flavor and is very versatile in the kitchen. It is resistant to bolting, allowing for a super long harvest season.

Bloomsdale spinach is a savoy-type spinach that is known for its crinkled leaves and sweet, nutty flavor. It has a relatively short growing season. Bloomsdale spinach is also a favorite of chefs because of its unique texture and flavor profile. This variety is particularly well-suited for use in salads and sandwiches.

Plant Spring or Fall

Spinach is a cool-season vegetable that can be grown from seeds in spring or fall.

Spinach seeds should be planted when the soil temperature is between 45°F and 68°F. You can sow them directly in the garden 4 to 8 weeks before the last frost in spring or 6 to 8 weeks before the first frost in fall. Alternatively, you can start them indoors 2 to 3 weeks earlier and transplant them later.

To plant spinach seeds, make a shallow furrow about half an inch deep and space the seeds one inch apart. Cover them lightly with soil and keep the soil moist until they germinate.

When the seedlings have their first true leaves, thin them to 6 inches apart.

Choose a sunny spot with loamy, well-drained soil that has a neutral pH. Water spinach regularly and mulch around the plants to conserve moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are heirloom seeds?

Heirloom seeds are the types of seeds your grandparents grew. These varieties have been passed down from generation to generation. They’re old reliable open-pollinated varieties that aren’t typically grown commercially. Instead, they have a rich history that predates modern breeding techniques.

You can learn more about open-pollinated, heirloom, and non-GMO seeds in our Survival Garden Training blog.

How do I know my seeds are fresh?

Every seed packet includes a "packed for" date, and we germination test each seed lot before packaging to ensure you receive viable, high-quality seeds that are ready to grow.

Are your seeds treated?

No, we do not pre-treat our farmer seeds. All of our garden seeds for sale are untreated, open-pollinated, non-GMO, and heirloom varieties. They are kept in temperature-controlled cooler storage until they are packed and shipped to keep them pest and disease-free.

In what zones can I grow your seeds?

The seeds in our collections are specifically chosen from varieties that can be successfully grown from Zone 3 to Zone 10 USDA Hardiness Zones. However, individual varieties have specific needs to thrive in different environments. Each seed pack has optimal temperatures for germination and instructions on seed starting. Consult local frost dates to plan your garden and get the most out of your seeds.

What is the shelf life of these gardening seeds?

Most seeds remain viable for 3 to 5 years or longer when stored properly. Check your seed packet for specific varieties. For best results, keep your seeds in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Store them in an airtight container in a consistent temperature environment—a refrigerator or cool basement works well. Proper storage helps maintain germination rates and extends seed life well beyond the packed date.

Where are Survival Garden Seeds sourced?

The majority of our seeds are sourced in the United States, with a few exceptions when the seed is difficult to source domestically. Whenever we do have to source outside of the US, we ensure our seeds are safe to grow, non-GMO varieties that meet our standards for germination and reliability.
