Nothing tastes like summer more than sweet fresh watermelon. If you want to enjoy watermelon this summer, here are some tips on picking a perfectly ripe watermelon, how to store it and a couple of quick recipe ideas.
How to Pick a Ripe Watermelon
There are several ways to determine if a watermelon is perfectly ripe. One of the trending methods, that farmers swear by, is the two finger method. If you can fit the first 2 fingers of your hand between the lighter color stripes on the watermelon rind, it should be ripe.
Some other things to look for include a dull rind. If the outer skin of the watermelon is shiny, it is still young and under-ripe. Look at the spot where the watermelon lay while still on the vine. The spot should be creamy and yellow. If it is white or pale yellow, it is not quite ripe so leave it on the vine.
There’s also the tried and true “thump” method. Pick up the watermelon (it should feel nice and heavy) and give it a thump with your knuckle. It should have a deep hollow sound. A high pitched sound indicates that it has some ripening to do.
Storing Watermelon
Unless you have a large family or are planning a gathering, one watermelon can take a while to eat. Some varieties, like Georgia Rattlesnake, can grow as large as 35 pounds. Of course there are smaller varieties like Yellow Petite which produces small 5 to 7 pound fruit that will fit into your refrigerator.
If you cut into a watermelon and want to keep it for a while, the key is to make sure that it is contained in airtight containers. The porous flesh of watermelon will very quickly pick up odors from your fridge if not stored properly. Cut your watermelon into cubes or slices and store in a zip lock bag or airtight container so it is ready to use anytime you want a sweet, refreshing treat.
Because watermelon is 92 percent water it freezes well, however when completely thawed the texture will be significantly altered and more like a smoothie. To freeze watermelon, cut it into chunks and spread in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Place into the freezer until frozen then transfer to a freezer bag or airtight container for storage. Use when slightly thawed for the best texture, or mix into smoothies, drinks or desserts.
Watermelon Recipes
Grilled Watermelon
Take advantage of the high-sugar content of watermelon by tossing thick slices of watermelon onto the grill. The sugar caramelizes and the flesh absorbs some of the smoky flavor from the grill.. Sprinkle a little kosher salt or even some cayenne pepper on the slices as they grill for a sweet and salty treat.
Watermelon and Feta Salad
Continuing in the sweet and salty vein, why not make a cool summer salad with watermelon, feta cheese, red onion and some fresh mint?
Ingredients:
- 8 cups of watermelon cut into 1 inch cubes (about 1/4 of a medium-size watermelon). Remove any visible seeds.
- 1/2 cup of chopped red onion
- 1/2 cup of lime juice
- 1/2 cup of crumbled feta cheese
- 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves chopped
- 1/2 cup of fresh parsley leaves chopped
Instructions:
- Chop red onions and soak in lime juice for 15 minutes. Do this while prepping the other ingredients.
- Combine all the ingredients in a large serving bowl and gently toss. Serve immediately and eat it all! This salad does not store well and will become soggy if it sits too long.
This is super versatile recipe. Toss in some fresh strawberries or cucumbers. Garnish with some walnuts or pistachios. There are endless combinations to customize this sweet and salty salad.
Whether you mix it into a frosty summer drink, pickle the rind or just eat a fresh-cut slice, watermelon is a tried and true summertime treat. Enjoy!
