Basil microgreens are the tender seedlings of the basil herb. They’re harvested just after the first true leaves grow. These micro plants have the nutritional and flavor benefits of mature basil in a more concentrated form. Growing basil microgreens is a simple way to incorporate fresh basil year-round. HOW TO GROW BASIL MICROGREENS

Sprinkle basil microgreens seeds thickly on half to one inch of moist potting mix, in a well-draining shallow container (5 inches by 5 inches). Press in firmly. Mist with water, covering the container to block out light. Place the container in a completely dark place. Keep it covered in darkness for 4-6 days. Mist as needed to retain moisture. After a few inches of growth or when microgreens begin to lift the cover, expose the seedlings to indirect light. Harvest them with scissors in two to three weeks.

MAINTAINING BASIL MICROGREENS

Basil microgreens require regular misting. Provide adequate light after the blackout period to prevent the shoots from becoming leggy. Harvest basil microgreens when they grow to about 3 inches tall by cutting just above the soil. Use them fresh to take advantage of their nutrition.
