4 o'clock flower, or Mirabilis jalapa, is cherished for its prolific blooms. Gardeners of every skill can successfully grow this lovely plant because it is so easy to care for. Four O’Clocks have tuberous roots which help them survive in sometimes difficult soil types and harsh weather conditions. Native to the American tropics from Chile and Peru northward to Mexico and Guatemala, they’ve naturalized in different parts of the world. Today, Four O’Clocks are suitable for growing in USDA hardiness zones 7 to 14.
If planting Four O'Clock seeds directly in the garden, do it when the frost danger ends. Indoor sowing can begin 4-6 weeks before that. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep, ensuring adequate space for root development. Four O'Clocks germinate best in warm soil. Usually, it takes a week or two for them to sprout. Once they are big enough, thin or transplant seedlings 12-24 inches apart.
Four O'Clock plants are relatively simple to care for. They perform well in moist and dry conditions, although regular watering encourages continuous blooming. This plant can grow pretty bushy. Occasional pruning can help maintain their shape. After the blooming season has ended, Four O'Clocks can be left in the ground. Alternatively, tubers can be dug up and stored for next season’s replanting.
Get your Four O'Clock seeds today, and plant a delightful flower, beautiful and useful at the same time. Their fragrant blooms will enhance the garden's aesthetic. Nocturnal pollinators can enjoy the nectar of this unique, evening-blooming plant.
