Different varieties of lupines are native to the Americas, as well as the Mediterranean, but our Russell Lupines originate in the American Pacific states and the Northeastern United States. Luipnes have long been celebrated for ornamental beauty and ecological benefits. These plants are very adaptable, growing 2-3 feet tall. Lupine seeds can be cultivated in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 8. Their flowers enhance garden biodiversity by attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, contributing to a vibrant ecosystem.
Lupine seeds have a tough outer coating, hence it’s advisable to scarify them before sowing (with sandpaper, for example), or soak them in water for a day before planting. Start the seeds indoors, 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, or sow them directly into the ground in late fall or early spring. Planting lupine seeds about 1/8 inch deep in a light soil mix and keeping them moist will provide germination within 14 to 21 days. When seedlings are sturdy enough, start outdoors transplanting. Space them 18 to 24 inches apart to allow for full growth.
Lupines prefer cooler temperatures and can tolerate drought. Regular watering helps young plants establish roots. However, mature lupines thrive with less moisture. Applying a thin layer of compost in spring will support healthy growth, making chemical fertilizers unnecessary. Removing dry blooms can encourage a second flowering while preventing excessive self-seeding.
With Survival Garden Seeds' lupine seeds, gardeners can embark on a rewarding journey of growing magnificent flowers. They bring aesthetic appeal to gardens while supporting biodiversity. Lupines are a valuable addition to sustainable gardening practices and an excellent choice for your garden.
