As French tarragon is notoriously difficult to grow from seed and usually requires access to cuttings or root division, we’ve got a wonderful replacement for the home gardener. Russian tarragon, scientifically Artemisia dracunculoides, is a perennial herb that provides an easy-to-grow alternative to French tarragon herb for your classic Béarnaise sauce. Its leaves provide a unique flavor. They enhance many recipes, from salads to compounded sauces.
Russian tarragon seeds are sown in early spring. Choose a location with lots of sunlight and soil that drains well. Barely cover the seeds with soil so they can get enough light for germination. Keep the soil moist until they germinate, which should happen in 14-21 days.
Once the plants are established, Russian tarragon needs minimal care. It is a vigorous perennial herb that can reach 3 and a half feet tall. Mulching around the plant base can offer protection during colder months. Harvest the leaves as needed, The best time is morning, when the essential oils are concentrated. Fresh tarragon can be used immediately. Excess leaves can be dried or even frozen for later use.
Cultivating tarragon will add a unique, flavorful herb to your culinary arsenal. This herb is also quite elegant and is an excellent ornamental plant with its thin, blade-like leaves and lovely flowers.
