Valerian, scientifically Valeriana officinalis, has a long herbal medicine history, mainly for its sedative effects. Its roots contain compounds believed to interact with the nervous system. They ease tension, promoting restful sleep. Valerian tea is well-known for these properties. Valerian is a native plant to Europe and parts of Asia, adapting well to a variety of climates. It is suitable for growth in USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9.
In early spring or fall, sow valerian seeds directly into the garden bed or start indoors and keep temperatures steady until germination. The seeds require light for germination. Press them into the soil surface rather than burying them. Valerian seeds might take several weeks to germinate. Be patient and maintain consistent soil moisture during this time. Space plants 12-24” apart.
Valerian plants will need regular care. They prefer a garden location with sunlight for at least part of the day. Moist, fertile soil is a must. Water the plants regularly, especially during dry days. Valerian can grow quite tall, often reaching 5 feet so it may need support. Its roots are typically harvested in the fall of the second year after planting. Medicinal properties will peak once the plant has matured a bit. Carefully dig up the roots, wash, and dry for use in teas, tinctures, or capsules.
Growing valerian from seed is a process that requires patience and resilience, but the final product will be wonderful: sweet blooms and beneficial roots. This is a plant bound to be a favorite in your garden, lasting for years.
