Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca) is a perennial fruiting plant. Wild strawberries are grown successfully in USDA hardiness zones 3 to 10. This plant usually grows 4 to 8 inches in height, spreading out. It produces white flowers that eventually develop into distinctive red berries.
Sow Wild Strawberry seeds indoors eight weeks before the last frost. Cover the seeds lightly with soil, and keep the soil moist. Make sure the temperature is in the range of 65 to 75 degrees F, and germination will start in 1 to 2 weeks. When the seedlings form a second set of true leaves, you may transplant them outside. Find a good location in the garden or even allow this pretty plant to be used as groundcover. These plants will spread by rhizome, so space the plants 12-18 inches apart.
Once rooted well, Wild Strawberry plants will be easy to care for. Water them regularly. Make sure the soil remains moist consistently. To keep the weeds away and retain water in the soil, add mulch around the plants. This plant benefits from organic matter in the soil. Harvest berries when they are fully red and ripe.
Growing Wild Strawberries in your garden provides unique fruit every year. They are great fresh. Or, they can be used in culinary preparations. Jams and jellies, salads and desserts - these berries add a burst of flavor to all sorts of dishes. Enjoy the charm of Wild Strawberries this season, and for many to come!
